We had a fantastic program and tour at the Old Town Public Library. Our hosts, Director Cynthia Jennings and Children's Librarian Cindy Seger, gave us a crash course in all of the programs that they provide for children and adults alike. The library is a hub for our community, serving many residents for their entire lives and giving our children a head start in school and in life.
The original old section of the library is an original Carnegie library. A Carnegie library is a library built with money donated by Scottish businessman and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. A total of 2,509 Carnegie libraries were built between 1883 and 1929, including some belonging to public and university library systems. 1,689 were built in the United States.
The Rotary Club of Old Town has been a faithful supporter of this community gem. If you haven't been there, consider stopping by. See what they have to offer. Maybe even drop a few bucks in the donation jar. Their stewardship of our tax money is commendable. Their services are unparalleled.
